To pea or not to pea, that is the question

So Lily and I have been together for 12 weeks now and I've been introducing new foods in order of priority i.e. Pizza, tikka masala, wine, chocolate however I am now sick of carrots and wondering if I dare be more adventurous on the veg front but I'm scared to death of getting a blockage.

Hubby has requested favourite tea tomorrow

Steak - yep, chips-yep, onion rings-erm, peas-dodgy, mushrooms- eek!

Any advice anyone?

    Introduced to my stoma 18/01/17

Had meat and veg - carrots, parsnip, swede, all type of potatoes with out skin most days. Doing ok until I could not resist the skin from jacket potato. Ended up on a drip in hospital for a day. The nurse said it was a common problem and she does have regular patients who find the offending foods hard to resist.

What I wouldn't do for a chicken jalfrezi right now - but blocking my stoma is a bit extreme.

Hi Joan from the North East (which country)

It is really nice to see you here and thanks for your contribution to this thread, we certainly hope that you will pop in and see us on a regular basis

Don't be down hearted about the food aspect you're only 5 weeks in and your insides are still settling down and sorting themselves out and they are not too happy about some foods as unfortunately you have found out, was it a blockage or something else that you put you on a drip.

But the good news it does get to better and shortly you will be able to try your favourite foods including your chicken jalfrezi in a few weeks you should be able to have a few spoonfuls to revive the taste and see how it effects you and your output.

If you been catching up with threads since you got your stoma and what everyone you reads these post will know what is coming next, yes it is you must chew, chew, chew your food every mouthful and just before you swallow have another chew.

If I can be of any assistance on pouches and accessories please ask I will help as I will do if you have any problems in your stoma management.

I have no doubt that very shortly Swiftyslittlegirl (aka Nicki or Nicky) will soon be in touch  as our resident bag specialist to give your handbag advice she believes that evert day or event warrants a new one!

    Ian

Sorry to hear your experience re your stoma. Some of the foods I now eat, should be those that could block but don't, steak, pork, chicken. I think these break down. I have not eaten celery, since my Henry (stoma) came into existence three years ago, although I have eaten a pancake roll, with all the bean sprouts. If he appears to be blocking, usually known due to output!  I lie down and pull my knees up and rock side to side, then massage tummy area. Seems to work for me, but as you have stated, there is always the chance it will block. I had jacket potatoes last night, but left the skin, just feel it is a risk to high. Strange how we can feel disappointed in not being able to have certain foods.

    Thank for the reply.

I have had great care and support from the cancer and stoma team in Darlington and Bishop Auckland. At times you want to talk to someone who has experienced the problems first hand rather than from a text book. Reading a lot of posts I consider myself to be very lucky. I start chemo tablets next week  with the possibility of a reversal some time in the future. Until then I will chew, chew, chew.

    • Definitely!) Peas! Pea soup is the most suitable dish. Tasty, nutritious, not fatty and very helpful for stomach and digestion. Look at this recipe. Very good Soup recipe

I have a stoma and I’ve been told that small peas are ok but emptying my stoma bag before bed quite a few went through me wholes clearly this is because I didn’t chew them well enough.

a simple solution is mushy peas :)foods l I’me sweetcorn are a certain no go and better to be on sage side.

j got my stoma in may 2019 and I have had one clock scare it was because of the sweetcorn I had so they are a no go  ever again sadly as I love vegetables
