To pea or not to pea, that is the question

So Lily and I have been together for 12 weeks now and I've been introducing new foods in order of priority i.e. Pizza, tikka masala, wine, chocolate however I am now sick of carrots and wondering if I dare be more adventurous on the veg front but I'm scared to death of getting a blockage.

Hubby has requested favourite tea tomorrow

Steak - yep, chips-yep, onion rings-erm, peas-dodgy, mushrooms- eek!

Any advice anyone?

  • Omg you're scaring me now. After wandering aimlessly round the supermarket this morning I finally decided on ......... drum roll..... cheese on toast for dinner (or lunch if you're posh) ....spooky....

Thank you for your replies, re jacket potatoes and our mantra re chewing. Apples in chewed and out, strange how some things just do not absorb.  Tomatoes I love, especially vine varieties which are my all time favourites, although I have to take skin off, I have always eaten the entire flesh and pips, with a goodly amount of chewing!!

I am currently in chemo again and I am finding care of Henry (stoma) difficult re diet, as I have gone off my food and my taste buds have gone, ugh!. Hold your breath chewers, all I fancied to eat this morning was a bowl of Granola fruit and nuts, chew, chew. Any light bites recommendations would be much appreciated, with as much flavour as possible.

  • Funny you should mention apples. My stoma was very accommodating and allowed me to eat practically everything but it definitely didn't  like apples! Strange.

I sympathise with the chemo taste buds (or lack of them). I really can't remember what I ate except potato rings. Very nutritious!

    Hi Ingrid

It's one of the little things that we are not told - not being able to taste as it appears that our taste buds are hibernating.

Spices are the obvious addition to foods to lift the taste

cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger to start with

All fruits pair well with fruit

Apples stewed to a lumpy consistency with some cinnamon added.

Freshly ground pepper lifts some fruits.

    Stewed rhubarb with ginger

Porridge with cinnamon sprinkled on would work with your granola.

Good quality tinned peeled whole tomatoes with freshly ground pepper

It's all about experimenting to get the correct balance you can always add more but you can't take it out.

Let me know what pairings you come up with or if you're really stuck let me know and I will try to come up with some more if you let me know which fruits you like (if we start with fruits we can progress on)

Fruits. I am not a keen eater of stewed fruit, although currently would try anything. Just returned home following a stop at one of my favourite garden coffee shops, their cheese scones are usually to die for. Today I ate half, and stored the other half for my lunch, smothered in marmite ugh! To some, but delicious to me.  I like all spices, but currently would really enjoy cold tinned pineapple. Is this a no,no with a stoma. "Henry" is starting to complain about my lack of interest in food. He just loves potatoes, pastas, bread, home made soups. I get the greens and bulky veg in this way.  Still have a notion for pineapple. I eat melons, bananas. Always struggle and give up on oranges, to fiddling. Apples, yes. I hope this loss of taste does not last long, usually on other cycles, it last a couple of weeks, this six cycle worth is coming every three weeks, on other occasions it has been over four, which gave some recovery time.

    Ingrid free falling currently.

    Hi Ingrid

When I say stewed apples I really mean cooking down to a soft fruit like you would get in an apple pie.

Don't recall how long you've has your stoma if it's less 6-8 weeks tinned pinneapple might be a no no as they are a high fibre food they could give you diarrhoea or may cause a blockage.

But like everything else try a little to see what happens and if no problems try a bit more - but it's all in the chewing.

    Pinneapple smoothie

Pinneapple upside down cake (made with tinned pinneapples and and when cooled cut in half and spread pineapple jam thickly on both sides and both pieces put back serve with home made pinneapple ice cream.

Thank you for your reply. My stoma is 3 years in place. He is fairly good when excepting new things, so will fetch out my tinned pineapple and try a little. Yum yum. Husband has said he will make me pancakes also, I love them with lemon juice and a good helping of lemon curd.

    Hi Ingrid

Try mashed Avocado on toast topped with anchovy or prawns and soy sauce.

Make Banana bread find recipe online, I always pick one that uses sunflower oil and use less sugar than recipe says.

Smooth peanut butter and jam on toast.

Cheese and marmite sandwich lined with cheese and onion crisps.

    Fish finger sandwich.

All these snacks don't cause me any problems.

The avocado sounds delicious, I am a real seafood addict, Henry stoma, can tolerate prawns, mussels, crab, no problems. I will try the banana bread. I know I have fishfingers in the freezer and cheese /marmite. My current state of not having, hardly any taste. Is frustrating, as I still have the hunger pangs, it's when I go to eat, that it all falls apart. Smaller more snack eating may be the way to go.
