Just discovered by accident that you are allowed three lots of support wear each year on prescription. It was mentioned by my stoma nurse that I should think about support as hernias are a possibility once you have a stoma. She said I should get some control pants, but I found out you can get the real deal on prescription from a leaflet that was at the stoma clinic. I had a lady here last night measuring me for a belt which will have a hole in it for the bag, so it is not flattened. She has put the order in by prescription. Ordinary support knickers squash the bag and as pancaking is a big problem for me, this belt seems a perfect solution. Â I have chosen a light weight.one as dont like anything very tight around my middle.
If anyone wants details of this company just ask.
That’s where having one of their team visit really pays dividends as you can see, feel try on and get 1st class advice that simply isn’t possible online. No pressure either it’s a service.
Hmm... our experience of a home visit was far from satisfactory. He ended up buying several non prescription 'aids' , all of which have been completely useless; and as I said above, the belt they supplied was actually more harm than good, as it compresses the bag and so can break the seal. Very yucky.
We discovered that the firm had ordered two of these products, not one as we asked. That used up our 'free' presciption for a year. Luckily our GP still signed of the SASH belt.
B all means have a home visit, but be aware that although you may not be paying, the NHS is, and they allow limited numbers of these products. So unlike a visit from the stoma nurse, these are sales visits.
Was that supportex? If yes I’m very surprised and I hope that you complained. General guidance as I understand is 3 belts pa with one being prescribed initially to avoid that type of occurrence, then order others two if needed . Most people need at least two for obv’ reasons.
no other support products were offered as my enquiry was for Stoma support belt anyway
I do find that the belts I use do not impeded the bag filling at all - unless I’ve had, in my case seeded bread - in which case it would pancake anyway. We’re all different.
I've got a supportx belt with guard on order and one pair of support pants/girdle. I'll review when they eventually arrive! I must admit that looking at the SASH website I feel one of their belts will make up my 3 items on prescription.
I'm currently doing yoga 3-4 times a week plus daily dog walks, I also tried horse riding again on Sunday (wearing my neoprene back support), i usually ride at least 3 times a week so will definitely be needing more than one pair of pants and belt!!!! I'll see how i get on with Supportx products then decide, guess I'll need to appeal to my GP to approve more than the quota.
I certainly won't be having any sales home visits etc I would never trust a salesman. Regarding the Supportx and some other makes I don't quite see why one would need support all around the midriff as it is only the area around the stoma that needs protection from hernia unless the person has ongoing issues in that area. Being physically fit for 64 before the urostomy op I think the rest of my stomach muscles were/are in decent shape. That is what draws me to the SASH so far
Your choice.
As for support if you have a ps hernia as I do then you may well need support it has to support the abdomen not just the part where the stoma is! Think about it.
5 weeks in and do not have a parastomal hernia and my lower abdominal muscles were strong before the op so I don't envisage any issues except around the stoma. If I didn't hernia anywhere else before then I would assume I only have the one area of weakness now
In the end I went with the SASH belt and I am glad that I did. Personal service from a smallish UK company. Friendly and the product is perfect for my needs. I would recommend to anyone to give one a try
