Hi. 3 weeks ago, I had a large parastomal hernia repaired while I was in for my APR. The surgeon had intended to use mesh and possibly to resite the hernia. In the event, my heart decided to go haywire so they stitched up the hernia, turned my loop stoma into an end stoma but left it in situ.
Over the last few days, I've started to get a sharp persistent pain roughly around the hip bone on the side of my stoma. It does come and go, but can be present for a few hours at a time. The stoma itself is active. I've chatted with stoma nurse, who doesn't seem too alarmed, suggesting it's probably the wound inside healing, aggravating nerve endings etc. She's going to have a look next week when she does second home visit.
Did anyone else experience anything similar after a large hernia repair?
Many thanks for any feedback.
Hi Elle55a30c
I haven’t experienced a parastomal hernia myself under either of my two stomas, so I’m afraid I don’t have any experience I can share with you.
While you’re waiting for others to reply, you might want to have a look at previous posts we’ve had in this group and the bowel and anal cancer groups where others have had this.
If you type in “parastomal hernia repair” into the search box beside the little magnifying glass symbol at the top of the page, it will bring up the other posts.
It may well be that your wounds are still healing inside after your surgery, but I can appreciate you will be concerned at this sudden pain you’re having. My father in law had a very similar situation when he was having his bladder removed and a urostomy formed. He had a very large hernia which had grown over the years and the surgeon attempted to repair it during the bladder removal surgery.
His heart stopped during the operation, and the hernia repair was abandoned, so he’s had to live with it ever since then with no possibility now of repair due to his heart not being strong enough for further surgery. I’m sorry you are in the same kind of situation.
You are only a few weeks post surgery, and things take time to settle down inside, so I hope the stoma nurse can give you some reassurance on her next visit.
Sarah xx
Thank you - I'll try that. Sorry to hear about your father's situation - hopefully he's as comfortable as he can be.
