Loop Ileostomy advice

Hi, I was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in January. Things moved very quickly and after finding I had a 7 cm tumour in my lower bowel that had spread to lymph nodes had a colostomy at Easter time followed by 25 days of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to get me ready for surgery in November.

I was told that my tumour had shrunk and surgery could go ahead early in November. This has now been completed and after 10 hours in theatre I was given a loop Ileostomy to replace the colostomy and I am now waiting for news of what happens next (29th Dec).

After my radio and chemo I managed to get myself into great shape physically by waking 8 miles daily and having a healthy lifestyle which I thought would assist my recovery after surgery. My mood now is quite low and I am back to square one on the way back to a new fitness routine I hope. So I was wondering if anyone has had similar experiences and could share some knowledge with me. I am worried that the loop Ileostomy is going to hinder my progress with my walking routine.

kind regards from a new member,

  Gary

  • Thanks Ann,

I know that we can look back and laugh at times at our situation which is to our benefit and credit, however when it is all part of our learning curve it becomes challenging and at times concerning.

To think that we now have the luxury to share our knowledge and understanding with others like ourselves and Dulac is truly remarkable. This chat on the MacMillan support group has given me a little confidence and light in my current dark part of my life. 10-20 years ago we would have nothing to compare to.

If people’s experiences are this in real time 2024 can you imagine what we will be able to achieve as people for the human condition in 10-20 years time.

Again thank you for being that break of light in a darkened tunnel and for providing a little bit of humour for us both.

    regards Gary476

Humour is my go to coping mechanism

I still think, we are the lucky ones!

Bin that cancer and enjoy life!

Keep fighting and having fun when we can

Where are you in the photo?

My brother lives in Spain and the sky is familiar.
