Hi all, i had an LAR about two weeks ago, had a request for a flexible sigmoidoscopy, at first i was immediately concerned but upon thinking about it and where it goes i’m assuming it’s just to check the work they carried out is ok.

My partner called back to see if we could bring it forward but she said they can’t, i assume as that would be too soon to be poking around where recent surgery has taken place, i’m due back in on the 18th of November so kind of makes sense thinking about it.

Just wanted to know if this sounds familiar to anybody who was previously at this stage after their LAR, TIA

  • Yes still early days, chemo to follow waiting to find out when it starts will know more next week, ideally i’d like a break from all this between now and Christmas. Got to make sure everything it gone first, then i’ll take it from there.

  • That’s a great attitude.
    Good luck with your treatment

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Ann, i’m trying to be kind to myself, rest and recover! If i can get a session or two in before the end of the year at least i’ve made a start, then i can think about the reversal of the ileostomy. May not be priority for me at the moment, although it would be nice, especially as i’m battling daily with the phantom poo thing. Apparently it gets better, i’m waiting for that time to arrive soon, i’ll speak to the stoma nurse again.

  • I struggled with the feeling that there was pressure in my back passage. Which distressed me no end as I had that sensation before op as I was close to blocking

    However it does lesson.

My consultant told me not to strain.

  • Hi again, yes it’s a daily battle even from the hospital bed i mentioned it, but since leaving all it’s done has got worse, i’ve tried sitting on the loo a couple of times and nothing. Some say psychologically you might feel relieved but not happened yet. Due a sigmoidoscopy soon, not looked at the prep yet as feel bombarded with stuff going on hospital wise, but no idea what to expect yet. Hopefully they might clear something then and i might get some relief for a short while.

  • It’s horrible. I had mucus nothing to show really for the sensation I had

    Hope it improves soon

  • I hear you Ann, spoke to the stoma nurse earlier she said try paracetamol, I had codine phosphate and it's been ok since to be fair
