Hi all,

I’ve had an ileostomy for nearly a year, how time flies by.

it’s normally well behaved but lately I’ve had a number of leaks during the night, it’s not helping with my much needed sleep as I’m overly conscious throughout the night checking.

any advice would be appreciated

thank you Sleeping

  • Hi sorry to hear about your night time problems.silly question but do you empty it during the night ?I find a gas build up at about 3.00 am so need to sleepily visit the loo or I might have problems.also I know its been 12 mths but has the stoma itself changed shape at all thus needing a change of hole in the bag.both ideas probably rubbish but good luck anyway

  • Thanks Kath , I also do the sleep walk once or twice in the night. I’m sure the size is ok too as no leaks in the day. It does come with its dilemmas does a stoma

    thank you for responding

  • Evening NickyP,

It happened to me a couple of times in the early days and stripping the bedding and taking a shower at 3 a.m. was no fun. My stoma nurse suggested that I use a Fusion applicator and a pair of Brava elastic tapes at each 48 hour pouch change. Instant result and no recurrence in the past 2 years. Wearing a long tee shirt in bed also helps the pouches (I have two) to slide over the sheets and avoid snagging.

  • Thanks Dulac

Where do you get the fusion applicators and brava tape I’ve not heard of this

i always where a cotton nightie to bed now … how things change lol

it’s just odd how it’s happening nearly a year in

    thank you

  • Evening NickyP,

I get them via my GP from Messrs Coloplast. You might have to ask your stoma nurse to support your request to your GP. Surgeons and other NHS professionals seem to treat the stoma nurses with great respect, which is well-deserved and a pleasure to observe.

  • Hi just another pondering.you say you wear a nightie,do you wear undies as well.I wear cotton ones which hold the bag in place so it cant move around(not tight ones, just midi briefs from m and s seem to do the job.Im probably just saying stuff you already do but hehho.

  • Same for me Kath, with 2 bags I always sleep in underwear and a nightshirt. Just ordinary cotton ones from Matalan but they keep everything in place.

  • Hi Kath

yes I have my M&S big knickers on in bed, I’m thinking that a call to the stoma nurses is on the cards.

I haven’t spoken to them since they discharged me last July but they are so helpful

thank you for your advice x

  • Hope you can get it sorted so that you get some much needed sleep.all the best.kath
