Kidney stent through to stoma pouch

After a radical cystectomy in March I now have had to have a stent inserted from kidney to stoma pouch to bypass a narrowed bit of ureter. This will be changed every 3 months. My question is- do I need to clean the stent ends when I change my pouch and can I shower at bag change with the stent exposed? Trying to minimise risk of infection.

  • Hi

I don’t think I’ve seen this question come up before so it will be interesting to see if anyone knows the answer. I only had stents into my pouch in the period immediately following surgery, so I’m afraid I don’t have the experience you’re looking for. You could give your nurse a call to check?

Hope someone can respond who knows more.

  • I had a look on line but I couldn’t find anything about this.If the stents have strings it appears you have to leave them alone. The stoma nurses should know I would have thought.Jane x

  • Thanks Jayne-yes Stoma nurse advised.

  • I hope you are still on this site and can answer my question. I had the same op as you in September 25 and had the stoma kidney stent inserted at the end of January 26 because one of my uretas was blocked. To stop the stent coming out it was stitched just below the stoma. Problem is the stitch is continuously breaking away and the stent droops down. I have had to go back to hospital 7 times now to have the stent restitched. Did you have the same problem by any chance or is it just my bad luck.
