Waiting... still...

Hi,

I'm due for a Abdominopereneal Resection and a radical Prostatectomy. I met with my surgeon in early December '22 & he advised surgery would be in mid January '23. I have had my pre op assessment in December, met with the anaesthetist, and had a meeting with the stoma nurse in early Jan...

...but still no surgery date...

I've spoken to the Surgeons PA on a couple of occasions and been advised that they can't get a date due to Operating theatre availability...

Whilst I am trying hard to carry on with "business as usual" and keep active etc I am finding it really hard to cope with the uncertainty.

My Oncologist has confirmed my tumour is stable, so the delay is not an immediate risk to my health, but I am struggling with the thought that (in my head) the surgery should have happened by now and I should be in the process of recovering...

How have others coped with this situation?

Many thanks

  • Hi Gurnboy

I would struggle in your shoes in fact I did. I phoned my colorectal nurses from my MDT team.
    Do you have their number?

Are you in the MDT system?

You probably will have to leave a message and they will get back to you

My healthcare gave me their contact number and I found them really supportive and could push the right buttons to get things sorted

Things may be different with us , I had a multidisciplinary team with the nurse as a contact for support. I realise that it’s different schemes on different areas

Hope that you get some positive news soon

    Take care

  • Thanks Artsie,

I had a really good relationship with my MDT nurse specialist, unfortunately (for me, not for her) she has been promoted and moved on. At the moment I don't have a point of contact other than a general number that points to a voicemail, - whenever I leave a message I get a call back from the surgeons PA (who is very nice and tries to help), sadly the only response I get is that there is no news...

Since posting, I have had contact to book in an appointment with the Urology surgeon, who will conduct the prostatectomy during the same operation that the APER takes place. I'm seeing them next week so Im hopeful that I'll gain some more information on the likely timelines involved now.

    Thanks

  • Hi

When there are different surgeons involved, there can unfortunately be delays as they try to plan their schedules. I had 3 surgeons involved in my surgery so did have a longer delay than might have normally been expected.

At my hospital the pre op assessment was only valid for 12 weeks, so I did have to have another one prior to surgery which seemed an unnecessary extra delay in the process when you just want to get on with things.

Hopefully you will get some more info next week.
