Hi. My wife had her colostomy and liver operations in March and is really struggling with things. She is still in a lot of pain at her bottom and she is still coming to terms with the stoma bag. Unfortunately, to make matters worse, she has just developed a hernia just under her stoma and is in a lot of pain - especially when she coughs. The stoma nurse has said that she will most likely require an operation and that she will be referred for special pants and a belt which could take a wee while. So, can anyone give me their experiences if they too have developed a hernia, any advice re how best to deal with her hernia and if there is anything we can do in until she either gets her operations and/or her special pants and belt
Thanks
Mr Mac
Hi Madmother.(that's some name lol). Thanks for your reply. I got my wife some really tight pants from M&S however, they caused some problems with her output and she's now quite weary about trying other ones. I will check Primark tomorrow for one's that maybe aren't so tight. Are they Primark's own make or are they another brand?
Thanks
Take Care
Hi Mr Mac
im a little annoyed that I was not warned after my stoma op that there is a 70% chance of getting a hernia, I was just told to get big girls knickers now I have a parastomal hernia.
Iv had to get bigger looser clothes cos it really sticks out and I’m finding I’m putting off going to any functions because I’m so embarrassed about it, iv just been measured up for knickers, however only 1 pair, we are only allowed 3 on prescription a year, So going to have to wear a normal pair of knickers underneath the support ones!!
iv brought some support knickers from primark maybe I got the wrong ones but they wasn’t any good they was to high and kept rolling down, they didn’t fit to well and was quite gappy, I have seen what look like really good ones online but there about £30 a pair I might buy a pair see what their like!!
I hope your wife able to find some good support underwear
Laura
Have you tried sloggi.not actual support knickers but good and supportive.they have an online shop,or some shops sell them.I got some via ebay.
I havent got a hernia but they support the stoma bag well and keep it nice and flat
Just another avenue to look at
All the best
Kath
Ps.Im so surprised you werent warned about hernias.I was told ,plus I am on a 5 yr research follow up, so it is obviously a well documented thing.
Hi katz51
yes I wear sloggies there ok for like you say holding bag in place but no good support for hernia well the ones iv got are not, however there maybe better supports ones, I did think these would have done the trick by no unfortunately not.

I had a hernia under my colostomy, was given 3 belts which helped tremendously. It takes away the pain & support the whole area , a gift sent. It' rakes ong to get used to it , but it's worth it. I didn't have to wait too long before the " belt lady came to measure me.
i had the choice between the slip on and the velcro one.I could never wear the slip on one, too hard to put on, as it is so tight.the velcro were really good. The hernia was remove this year in March when the colostomy was replaced by an ileostomy. The hernia can come back any time anywhere, we just have to be careful not to do too strenuous exercises or lift heavy bags obviously. I wish your wife all the best for a good recovery. It does take long but she will get better! The stoma nurse can help with having the appointment asap, mine did, she is wonderful! Good luck! Brigitte
