Has anyone experienced pain around area of surgery/stoma

Hi all. Hubby had surgery March 24th at rectal sigmoid junction it went well, sadly he then had perforated Bowel and another surgery performed in different part of Bowel to repair Bowel perforation and then he got sepsis and in ICU, so he had colostomy first then illeostomy, only one stoma as they made it look illeostomy.

he has been very unwell in hospital a long time and lost a lot of weight.

he is home recovering and eating well and making progress albeit slowly.

he is worried though as when he walks sometimes he gets pain in the area he had surgery, he does not need to take painkillers and the pain subsides, but it is worrying him, he worry’s a lot more these days, but understandable considering all he has been through.

he mentioned it to physio and she said it may be inside healing and pulling.

however he is worrying he could be something else

has anyone else experienced this, any info, thoughts?

he is now 11 weeks post surgery and still has two open wounds but they are healing well now .

thanks x

  • Hi

Hope you are keeping well yourself and glad to hear hubby is making slow steps. As you know my surgery was in October and I still get pain and niggles around the whole region . When I first had it after the surgery they said I had adhesions from the surgery. Is the illostomy working ok, if there is nothing to empty then I would call the hospital. I had an appointment in May with surgeon and wanted to discuss but this has been cancelled till September!

    Take care

  • Hi Peacock62

good to hear from you, the illeostomy is working fine, so no problem there.
it is just around the surgery site he gets the pain and only when he walks, so I think like you and others have suggested likely to be adhesions or scar healing etc.

yes he is making progress, slow and steady. Just want him well again as you can imagine.  He was referred for chemo but oncologist declined as a) he wasn’t well enough and b) it would have been capecitabine and he only managed 12 days of that before and got those vasospasm s so we hope and pray that all will be well he has been through enough these last few months.

take care and best wishes xx

  • Hi lovely to hear from you too, I've just thought of another  thing that can cause the pain , I know everyone with an illostomy is different as to what they can and can't eat and some people seem to be able to tolerate anything , I have a very limited diet and I do find if I eat anything with crispy edges like roast potatoes for instance  I will get pain , also green veg which I can't stand overcooked so only have in soups sometimes give me pain the next day.

    Hope this helps
