Hello

Can anyone point me in the direction of information about the annual allowance for support wear for ostomates? I have bought some items myself, to try out, but I understand there is also a prescription allowance, and that would help me a lot.

Many thanks & best wishes.

  • Hi

The allowance depends on a number of things

    • The discretion of your GP
    • The item you are ordering

For some items like pants it could be up to 6 per annum for others it could be up to 3

I've never ever managed to obtain a definitive list giving the break down or if it is a mix and match situation.

If you're dealing with a manufacturer you might find yourself pressurised into ordering your full allocation on the first order which you should not do as if the sizing or comfort is wrong you are stuck until the following year.

    Hope this helps

Tried to order stoma pants from Blush site but they said that I cannot order them on prescription in Scotland. Does that mean I cannot order them at all on an nhs prescription in Scotland. Why is this? Does it apply to all sites?

  • Hi . I’ve had a quick look at the site and it seems to say that the offer to apply for the NHS allowance  is open to all the UK? There was an option to chat online so perhaps you could try that or give them a ring?

I ordered and got acknowledgement back. Then second email to say sorry did not apply to Scotland . I have emailed my stoma nurse to check what the situation really is.

E mailed my stoma nurse. . Free underwear in Scotland on NHS. Is not available foe stomates unless they have a parastomal hernia. So Blush site was right, not  on NHS in Scotland, but allowed elsewhere in UK. Stoma nurse suggested I just buy support pants.
