Surviving Oesophageal Cancer

Hi , I’m new to this site but wanted to share my experience of living with oesophageal cancer. I realise that I’m one of the lucky ones in that my cancer was caught relatively early and was therefore operable.

I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in February 2007 and after many tests and two sessions of chemotherapy I underwent an Ivor Lewis operation, which is major surgery to remove the cancer, and lasted around seven hours. I responded well throughout and remained only five days in intensive care before being moved to a general ward and released a week later.

Since then, I’ve continued to do well but suffer from dumping syndrome as a result of the surgery. This is an unpleasant side-effect that causes fatigue, sweating and nausea after eating. Also, I now have to have vitamin B12 injections every three months as my body can no longer process this essential vitamin.

All in all, I feel ok and have remained positive all the way through. I realise I’m extremely lucky and count my blessings every day.

I’ve read so many negative reports about this type of cancer so I felt I had to share something positive for those of you who have, or know someone with, Oesophageal cancer.

All the best

Crystal

    Hi Sam

As crystal has said look forward to the future and try to be positive, it will be exactly three years today since my operation, I still get my ups and downs but I am still here trying to live a full life. I look at some of my personal acheivments over the last three years and am sometimes unable to believe them myself.

    Keep up the good fight,

    Steve

We can’t let a three year milestone go by without a little celebration, as we all know what it’s cost us and the struggle it’s been to get this far and the sense of achievement we sometimes feel at very small steps forward.  Congratulations, and here’s to this third year and all the next milestones.  I hope each and every one brings you more health, wellness and fitness.

    Love

    Crystal xx

Hi Crystal, I have only joined the website today after seeing your post regarding surviving Oesphagus cancer and wanted to write and share an inspirational story.. Its not my story I wanted to write about, its my wonderful Mums. Everyone thinks that there Mum is special, but mine really is. Mum is now celebrating her 32nd year following her operation for Oeosphagus cancer. Mum was one of the first to undergo the terrible operation, no chemo or radio theapy then, and she is still here to tell the tale. She too has always had certain foods she cannot eat, mainly spicy foods and she cant touch anything that sais 'diet' on it.   Mum came through her operation with sheer will and determination and the Doctors at the time said that they couldnt believe her tremendous powers of recovery. I have also seen one of my Sisters survive breast cancer 10 years ago, and I am sad to report my eldest Sister is currenlty battling ovarian cancer. I believe she too has the tremendous iron will and courage that Mum and my other Sister have, and pray that she too can beat this terrible disease. I do hope my Mums survival story will bring encourgement to you and others. Love and best wishes Sandii  xx

  • Hi Sandii

What a lovely thing to do, to drop by here with such a wonderful story about your dear mum. I thank you for this because I know this will bring enormous encouragement and comfort to those facing the surgery and those patients newly recovering from it.   It’s also comforting to the rest of us further along, as it shows just what is possible.

Thirty-two years is absolutely amazing, especially as I realize that medical science and technology were nowhere near as advanced as they are nowadays.  I just want to send my warmest congratulations to your mum as well, for being such an inspiration and a true spirited fighter.

Diet is always the tricky issue after gastric surgery, as you know only too well, and  anything that says ‘diet’ on it for me is especially bad Lol.  But you are right about the spicy food, because although that was always my favourite, since surgery it physically hurts my insides if it’s too spicy.

It’s good news too that your sister has survived breast cancer, and although I’m sorry that your other sister is fighting ovarian cancer, I’m sure with your family traits of positive attitude, she too will overcome this illness.  I send her healing vibes and strength.

It’s always been my belief that with a certain attitude, a smidgeon of luck and good medicine and medical advice, it’s possible to weather most storms, come what may.

Your own belief and positive attitude shines, so I hope that it serves you and your family very well, both now and in the future.

    Good luck

    Love

    Crystal xx

Dear Crystal, many thanks for your words of encourangement for my Sister. I was only looking at the website for the first time today to try and find some information on ovarian cancer when I saw the link to your message. I thought Mums story may be helpful and uplifting for others. This site is wonderful for bringing people to together and to share and support one another. Thankyou for your kind thoughts and best wishes for my Sister. Its early days as she has only had one session of chemotherapy but is so poorly at the moment. I hope I can bring you some positive news very soon. Many thanks again and best wishes, love Sandii xx

  • Hi Sandii

Many thanks.  I don’t know if you’ve come across the Ovacome site before, but it has lots of useful and supportive info, as well as an interactive online community.

    http://www.ovacome.org.uk/

Here on the Mac site there is the Ovarian Group you might join, which seems to be very active, as well as loads of info on the following link:

    http://www.macmillan.org.uk/Cancerinformation/Cancertypes/Ovary/Ovariancancer.aspx

There are also community nurses here that you can telephone for help and support.

Good luck with the research and I hope that you find all the info and support you need in order to help your sister.  It’s my hope that she will respond very well to treatment and with all your combined energy, be able to overcome this illness and get well again.

    Love

    Crystal xx

Hi Crystal, just turn it up and keep rocking you wonderful lady, thinking of you, love leisha xxxxx

    And to everyone

Lovely to see you as always and I often think about you and hope all is well.  How’s the training going and what’s your next challenge?  You have done so well in raising money for charity, as well as in personal achievement, so you should be very proud, as I know Ed would have been.

I’m rocking thanks, especially after hubby won the Grand National in a sweepstake and also backed the same horse to win in the race and then my horse came second, so am rocking on a rocking horse at the moment Lol.  It’s all tinged with sadness though because of the two horses that fell badly and died.  Whenever something like this happens I always say I won’t back them next year, but I always do.  It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and I used to love going to the races once upon a time.

Anyway Leisha, I hope you’re well and your family is keeping you busy and smiling.  We are all here for you, as I know how difficult many days must be for you.

    Lots of Love

    Crystal xx
