Hi, My name is Bob and I live in Cambridgeshire. I am married with an 8 yr old daughter and three older step sons. Up untill the end of last year everything was tickety boo having recently moved to a new house which we love. Work was busy but enjoyable. I am Manager of an electrical companys maintenance department and my Wife, Linda was enjoying her job as a Nurse. The three boys are buying there own house nearby and all work locally.
In November I went to my Doctors with a small "cyst" on my chest. After a couple of referals and many Xrays, pet scans, bone scans and CT scans I was told the news everybody dreads. My lump on the chest was a secondary cancer of which the primary was in my left Kidney. I was fast tracked to the Royal Brompton, under the expert care of Mr Laddas who informed a long and complicated operation would need to be carried out to remove the bone tumor and surrounding bone which involved two ribs,my collar bone and chest bone. I did not have time to panic, the operation was carried out the next day over 10 hrs. After nearly two weeks in the Brompton I am recovering well from this op but I have since been told that the Cancer is in both kidneys as well as small mets in both lungs. It seems at the moment further ops are out the question and i have been put on the drug Sutent. I am one week into this and so far so good. I do not know what the future holds but I have to remain positive.

A  petition to get a review of how New Cancer Drugs are allocated.has been started I   signed it just as it started and now there r are over 500 people already signed.

I do not know if their will be any change but if we all sign maybe something will improve.

We travelled to London early this morning and I must say I was forever hopefull but not really confident of a good outcome. We arrived early and went and had a drink before going to our appointment. The Marsden is undergoing a bit of refurbishment so we took a while to find the clinic. Eventually, after what seemed like an age, we were called in and my consultant radiologist sat us down and started explaining things. He started by going over the scan results from the Cromwell and saying how he had to add up all the fractions and if the number was too high then further treatment is limited or a high risk no go. At that point Myself and Linda looked at each other and feared the worst, but then he explained thed my totals were within the tolerence levels and he infact improved the odds from 30% to just 5 % for risk of really bad side effects. I could not refuse these odds and signed the consent form straight away.  I go back on the dreaded Sutent tomorrow and during the cycle have two hospital visits, one to make the plastic mask and one to map out the treatment. The day after i start my two week break from the Sutent I have a ten day treatment plan. It wont be easy as it will involve Linda driving me to london each day for an hours appointment. So all in all a great result and one for which we are extremely grateful. its another lifeline, a chance I will grab with both hands and make the most of it. It was great to come home and tell Kate a bit of good news for a change. She has been staying out with some of her friends and after hugging me for a couple of hours is now out again for the night. Me being me, im planning to go back to work next week and try and get a months work in before the brain treatment starts as I have been warned it will knock me for six and I will not be able to do much at all. We will see about that.  Thank you all once again for your good wishes and prayers. it worked.
