I'm struggling, and I wonder if anyone here might be have any advice for me.

My 47yr old husband has been diagnosed with treatable but incurable bowel cancer, which has spread to Liver and Peritonim.

I'm trying to find resources to help explain to our 2 small children, whats going on, and to encourage open questions without scaring them.

I've seen 2 books 'only one of me' letters from mum or letters from dad... but i cant work out from the blurb if the books are both about mum passing, and the letters from dad are for how we get by after? Or if its just the male parent is passing in the letter from dad and its the same book flipped for which parent is passing?

If the book, letter from dad, is about dad passing...does it also reflect the child/ren being girls... it seems to imply dad and son relationship...

I'm just looking for something that is kind, to the point, and will help our 2 small children process this difficult time in as healthy a way as possible.

I couldn't decide if this was the best forum, but i couldnt see another more appropriate.

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear about your husbands cancer.

I found the book Badgers Parting Gifts  (Susan Varley) helpful when we experienced similar in our family. It was recommended by a teacher at school. I found it helpful to talk to the school as they could also offer support and had their own resources to help. My son was in year 1 at the time.

This link has some more info that maybe of help.

If it would help to talk things through and get some further advice please do give the Support Line a call. They can also have a look in your local area to see if there is any further support available.

Many people find Maggies really helpful. I wonder if there is one local to you.

Hope this helps a bit. The book I recommended is still on Amazon and there are several other ones that also look helpful. It may be worth having a look to see if any others might also be good.

  • Thankyou, we have Badgers Parting Gift, but I'm not sure it's young enough for my 4 year old.

School are doing bits with the 6yr old (nearly 7) but I'm finding it a bit mind boggling trying to find resources, I'm sure we can't be the only ones. So I was hoping someone here may be familiar with the books I've asked about.

I will look at Maggies, we also have looked at the fruitfly
