Being the parent of a cancer sufferer

Hi

My son is in his late 30’s and has stage 4 bile duct cancer.

He is a real fighter and already outliving his original (terminal) prognosis.

We are a strong and supportive family network but I sometimes struggle with the thought of losing/outliving my child.

My biggest fear is one day being at his funeral.

I think it might help to chat and share feelings with another dad/parent in a similar position

Thanks

  • Oh (((Imp))) my heart goes out to you. I was in a similar position three years ago when my daughter, then in her early 40s, was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.

You feel that your world has turned upside down - you're living in a parallel universe. It seems impossible that your friends and neighbours are carrying on with their normal lives. I just wanted to hide away from the world with my daughter and 'make it go away'. But that's not real life, is it?

We've been lucky. 2.5 years of brutal treatment - radiotherapy, chemo and 3 surgeries - life will never be the same but things are looking good.

I hope that you are still able to share special times with your dear son. Sending love, strength and a hug.

  • Hi Cherry

So pleased you seem to have come out the other side with your daughter’s cancer treatment.

I hope you enjoy continued signs of improvement

We are fortunate that all our family and friends show us a lot of empathy and support, always asking how we and Liam are, and rallying behind all our awareness and fund raising efforts.

We have got past the time when the cancer diagnosis occupies every waking moment, and robs you of your sleeping hours too.

We now value and fill every moment we have as a family and do our best to make new and happy memories together.

But there is still that dark cloud on the horizon and I know there will be pain at some point down the line.

Reaching out to other members of the MacMillan community is a helpful start and I am sure will prove invaluable in the months ahead

Take care. and please stay in touch if I can be of any further help in your journey

    Imp
