Mam diagnosis, I'm 30 weeks pregnant

Hi all,

I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and last weekend my mam broke the news that she's been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

She told me that the doctor was optimistic, and there was talk of chemotherapy and then possibly surgery. My concern is that I'm not 100% sure how honest she was being with me, due to my being pregnant.

I'm absolutely terrified that I'm about to lose my mam at a time in my life that's already quite difficult. I'm doing my best to stay positive, but all I can think about now is that I could be learning to be a mam whilst losing my own mam. My pregnancy has been quite difficult, and I feel like this has become the last straw for me and I just want it to be over now. I know that sounds selfish and terrible but that's how I feel.

  • Hi

Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.

I am Steve, one of the community champions and my experience of cancer is via my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma.

Sorry to hear about your mum, though positive that she told you about the stomach cancer, there is quite a lot of information here that explains more about this and we can see that chemotherapy and surgery are the main forms ot treatment here.

Something I found quite helpful was looking at Your feelings when someone has cancer as being able to recognize these emotions and accept them as normal and valid helped them be a little bit less overwhelming.

Do post on here whenever and remember that if it helps you then you are more than welcome to ring the helpline on 0808 808 0000 to speak to one of the staff there, the line is open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week.

    <<hugs>>
