Think I’m getting a cold - how to protect vulnerable partner post-treatment?

Hi,

I don’t know if I’m being paranoid but I think I might be getting a cold and am so worried about making my partner (just finished treatment for tonsil cancer) ill. He is already very ill.

His son lives with us and seems to have had a little cold this last week, nothing sinister but I’ve been wiping down the bathroom and door handles and he hasn’t really seen him much. I’m now thinking I might have it! I am sharing a bed with him and pretty much caring for him all the time, I really don’t want to make him any worse than he already is. I guess the obvious would be to take precaution and maybe stay away from him. That’s really hard when caring for him and he doesn’t really want anyone else looking after him. Also I’m not sure if I actually am getting a cold as there’s no clear signs or if I’m just run down in my luteul phase and paranoid! See no evil

Im intrigued as to what others have done in this situation? Pray tone1

  • Hi Debs

No, you are not being paranoid and it is natural to be worried about infections at this time. It sounds like you are being sensible in wiping down the door handles etc. I am sorry to hear that your partner has been so poorly and that your son has had a cold and you may have picked it up.

I would recommend getting in touch with your husbands CNS for advice. They will know about his current health and whether there are any risks of infection for him.

I know during and after chemo I was at risk of picking up coughs and colds etc and that any infection could potentially be serious and put me at risk of sepsis etc. The risks can be different for different cancers, different types of treatment etc.

Alternatively please give the Macmillan Support Line a call and speak to one of the nurses who would also be able to advise you.

    Jane
