My dad had emergency surgery for a bowel blockage which needed a stoma to be put in place but even before he went for surgery the dr said it was cancer (not sure how he knew this for sure) anyhow. After having a stoma fitted the dr informed us that due to the tumour being stuck to other areas they weren’t able to remove any of it as planned. Since then my Dad has had numerous scans and tests and we are awaiting a consultation to tell us what now? The only thing he has been told whilst in hospital is that it is cancer, not cancer of what or where just cancer. In the meantime he came home after his surgery and much to my disgust on his discharge papers it states that one of his scans showed more masses on his lungs consistent with metastasis. So that was how we found out it has spread. We haven’t seen anyone at all since before all his testing to discuss his cancer and this week we are going for a consultation but they’ve now decided they might not be able to tell us everything we need to know as they didn’t take the correct biopsies. Am I wrong to be absolutely livid? I’m trying to stay strong for my dad and bro n sis but I feel like my dad is being let down. We’re almost a month since his emergency surgery and have no more information than that day really.
Hello Smiggeroo
I am Brian, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. By me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of the page and I hope seen and answered by other members of the group.Whilst you are waiting for answers here's my thoughts.
The hospital need to "pull their finger out" and get this mess sorted:
* Your first course of action is to contact the hospital PALS office (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) Tell them of the situation and ask them to deal with it as an urgent matter.
* As PALS is a hospital run service - they are not the best at sorting matters out and your next course of action should be a formal complaint to the hospital - again this takes time.
* From personal experience of continued delays - put a very detailed time line of events in an e-mail to your MP and ask them if they can help - this usually works far better than both of the above.
Herr's a link to some additional information you may find of use:
I hope the above helps and you get dad sorted - please do come back to me if I can do anything else for you.
Best wishes - Brian.
