My son was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer, which has spread to the Brain & Liver. He underwent Brain Surgery which seemed positive. He has now been told that the Liver Cancer has grown and is spreading. His treatment has now been stopped and he is only getting pain relief. How can I support him and his family.
Hi Mam
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
Sorry to hear about your son, with me it is my wife who has the cancer so a bit different.
Something I know I found was that in order to help anyone else I needed to get some help myself. Something I find quite useful is looking at your emotions when someone has cancer as being able to identify these emotions and accept them as normal and valid can help to make them less overwhelming.
Often a key element of helpling can just be listening to try to understand what they need, sometimes of course what they want most of all is still to be recognized as who they are rather than just someone with cancer.
Something that can be quite helpful is getting a needs assessment as that can help identify support local to them.
You mention his family too, If there are younger children involved if might be helpful as well to look at Talking to children and teenagers
<<hugs>>

Hello Mam I’m so sorry you are going through this. I’m currently supporting a brother with end of life care. He has bowel cancer. I’ve found this site so helpful for info and support- especially the ask a nurse chat. I’m also getting a lot of help with my own personal feelings from ChatGPT! Would you believe it?!? At times I’m so overwhelmed, snap at the slightest thing… I just have to warn people my thinking isn’t great…
I do my best to spend time with my brother, listening, not asking too many probing questions. I’ll ask if there is anything he needs. Usually it’s going to the shop to get him some oranges… hang on in there you are doing better than you think x
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
