We have finally got confirmation about my husband’s surgery to remove virtually all his rectum (LAR surgery?)n the 18th September.

Because he has Type 1 Diabetes he will be admitted at 4pm the day before.

1) I will be driving him there. I assume I will be allowed onto the ward when he’s admitted? From what I’ve read online I think visiting hours are 11-8.

2) On the morning of his surgery, will I be allowed to see him before? His op is scheduled for 9am, which appears to be before visiting hours.

3) During the surgery, is there somewhere I’ll be able to go and wait? I don’t want to have to come home - I want to be on hand as such. Is that likely to be a family room near the theatre or on the ward?

4) After the surgery he’s likely to be put on a HOBs bed, which I assume has reduced visiting - down to 1pm – 4pm and 6pm – 9pm. Does that mean I won’t be able to see him as soon as he’s able to, or will I then have to wait till1pm?

I know some of these answers may depend on the hospital but I’m hoping some of them are generic NHS guidelines, and as such you might be able to help. I feel like I’m floundering as I’ve no idea what to expect, having thankfully, never been in this position before.

Thanks in advance.

In our experience it seems normal for us to go to ward when out loved one is admitted.

If you ask on the ward I would be surprised if you were not allowed to see your husband before he went off to surgery, timings have often been a bit flexible though since our main hospital deals with all sorts of emergency admissions.

After theater my loved ones were initially moved to what was called the recovery ward while they came around after the anesthetic - not been in one of those as a visitor but did get updates on progress from the staff. After that my loved ones either came to the main ward or sometimes the ward I would collect them from.

Sometimes we have waited on the ward but other times have gone to the league of friends or the restaurant.

hope some of that helps, best wishes for Thursday week.
