Hi. I’ve just found the group. My mum has terminal breast cancer, now in her liver, lungs, and the fluid around her heart. it was discovered in March and we were told she couldn’t have treatment bc of how extensively it was. The doctors reversed that decision in mid April and put her on ‘palliative chemotherapy’. She has had 13 rounds of chemo. It has been incredibly hard on her and she has gone from living a full, happy, independent life, to being a total invalid. Who can’t stand up or walk without support and is confined to home. Her oncologist hasn’t physically seen her since April. She makes all decisions based on blood tests, and hasn’t factored in mum’s quality of life. Mum feels like the dr has abandoned her. Watching her suffer has been the worst pain of my life. I’m heartbroken and also so, so angry at the system. Has anyone else experienced this?
And does anyone have a counsellor they would recommend who specialises in this area?
thank you x
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
I am Steve one of the community champions and my experience of cancer is via my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma.
I wonder if your mum would be able to ask to see the oncologist to explore what is happening and what her options might be, she could ask her GP to contact the hospital on her behalf and that might get things moving. n the past I have found contacting the PALS department at the hospital quite helpful.
When I finally decided to seek help my first step was to walk in to our local Maggies centre, mostly cried out my story and they helped put me back on to a track where I found some balance. I later did a living with less stress course that was very helpful in letting me focus more on the here and now rather than an uncertain future I could not control. We have a tool here in your area that can help to find local support near you given your postcode - it sometimes helps to use the hospital postcode too.
You are of course welcome to post on here anytime and if it helps please use the helpline 0808 808 0000 it is open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week.
<<hugs>>
Steve
