My partner has just been diagnosed on the 22nd December with prostate cancer (gleason 7 3+4) since then he’s had up days and down days, today is probably the worst down I have seen him have in the 23 years we’ve been together. He picked our youngest two children up from school and before I came home he’d gone out.
Positive things have been happening for other members of our family and he sees that, and has said he has nothing positive happening to him.
If we do try to say positive things he puts it down and turns it back to a negative.
For many years I have suffered with anxiety and mild depression then last year I was diagnosed with focal epilepsy. I want to be strong for him, be there for him and support him as much as he has me over the years, but he just pushing me away. Saying no one is considering his feelings but when asked he says I’m fine don’t worry about me. He’s refused to come home tonight, he’s refused to tell me where he’s staying. Says that he’s safer on his own. How do I help him? How do I get him to truly open up ? (He’s a proud man that doesn’t show weakness)
My heart goes out to you. I do hope he has returned home.
I would be inclined to try being completely straightforward and say "I want to support you any way I can - but I'm confused - the message I'm getting is that you don't want me to change anything to accommodate your illness, but I see you are struggling and it affects us all" then suggest that if he doesn't want to talk to you about how he's feeling, maybe (for you) he would talk to someone at Macmillan (if his worries are mainly cancer related) or CALM (https://www.thecalmzone.net/) who deal with all sorts of depression.
When my husband got his diagnosis he watched youtube videos of old ZX Spectrum games silently for nearly 12 hours, then moved on - but he generally likes to pretend all is well, to fool himself as much as he can. When he is obviously unwell and can't pretend he gets down quite quickly, but talking to me would not be his first choice.
