hey guys and girls, basically My dad has kidney cancer and I’m finding it really hard to get my head around and be able to cope with it. Was wondering if there was any advice anyone could give me please. It’s starting to drive me mad

  • Hi and welcome to the community. Sorry to hear about your dad and it is understandable that you are worried about him. We know that cancer does not just affect the person, but has far reaching effects on family and friends. If I can offer my thoughts from the opposite side as I was the patient and my grown up kids felt the same way as you. Whatever treatment your dad is having, the most common side effect is tiredness and so you could help with practical things, even something as simple as going for a morning paper will help. I found the best thing was to talk about it. Try and treat your dad as normal as possible and not treat him as an invalid. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be honest with him. Your dad may try and keep things to himself thinking he is protecting you, but if you can get him to open up and share with you, you will find it relaxes the atmosphere in the house. Talking helps everyone. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

Hi there, it was 5 years ago my dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer.  I won’t lie, it’s been tough, but my advice to you is read up all you can so you understand what treatments he’ll be having, what else is available, and try to play an active role,in understanding treatment with hospital..planning and asking questions of the Doctors etc. I found that unfortunately we did need to push a lot as you can often be a number that gets forgotten. Also if your dad feels ill or gets a change in ailment at any point, never hesitate to contact a Doctor as sometimes time is critical in terms of treatment options and recovery.  Finally, I found this site a massive help. Be strong. Wishing you and your dad well in this journey.
