my close friend who had breast cancer 10 years ago has just told me it has spread to her liver and is now terminal and she didn’t want to let us down but she probably wouldn’t make our new year party. I am devastated but more importantly have no idea how to best support her as she lives 400 miles away. Should I phone every week to “see how she is” which seems not the right thing? My mum says to just act normal but normally we would talk about our plans for holidays and the garden and Xmas. I’m very scared of getting my approach all wrong when I just want to say “I’m here for you “

I'm very sorry to hear that your friend's cancer is not curable but it's great that you want to support her as so many 'friends' fall by the wayside when the going gets tough.

I can understand why you're worried how to approach your friend but if you're sensitive to their feelings you can't go far wrong. Calling and messaging your friend is a great way to keep in touch and you could always ask her when it's best to call her.
