How can I help my dad now it looks like he can’t stand up anymore

My dad has for the last year, had secondary renal cancer that has spread to his bones, and in particular his spine. After a bout of compression of the spinal column, then a crushed vertebra, after experiencing pain and a quick loss of mobility, 3 weeks after radiotherapy, he’s still unable to stand up in hospital despite physio etc. He’s only able to get up with a hoist and the nurses. They’re now starting to talk about him going home, where he lives with my mum. They’re both in their 70s, and I just have no idea how this is going to go...Can anyone give me an idea of what support may be on offer, and how life can be made easier for them? It breaks my heart to think he may just now be stuck in bed, and never able to go out again. I live 200 miles away with my job and husband/ kids and visit as much as possible but can’t live there....

  • Hi , the hospital should ensure there is a suitable care plan in place before they discharge and that will then be down to  their local council. It can be quite variable though and sometimes a bit of a postcode lottery.

In my mums case she has carers in twice a day once to get her up and in the evening to put her to bed. Later however they went in to a sheltered housing scheme where they had the certainty of someone on site 24/7 to cope with emergencies.

Thanks for the response Steve. They’re now arranging some kind of care package..my mum who is 73 will not be able to lift him or roll him on the bed etc as they’re doing in the hospital, so I’m assuming it’s going to be pretty thorough. It’s overwhelming watching all this happen to him, as I’m sure you have found with your mum.
