Risks of lymphoedema / Tattoo

Hii, I am new here and looking for some advice if anyone could relate. I just finished my breast cancer treatment and I am looking to get a tattoo cover up. Last week I had surgery on one breast and have an implant in. I have been told to wait up to a year before touching the area, which is fine. But has anyone had any problems with tattooing on an implant breast? I also have an unfinished tattoo on my arm but was told by my doc after having a left mastectomy about the risks of lymphoedema after also having lymph nodes removed, especially no BP to be taken and no jabs in my left arm and recently asked him about finishing my tattoo and he said it would be a gamble if I was to continue to tattoo my arm as could cause lymphoedema. Does anyone relate to this, maybe gotten a tattoo? Should I just accept the unfinished tattoo for what it is instead of risking? I hope someone can relate. Thank you

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnosis…… and it’s an interesting question you have put up.

I know from experience having been on my cancer journey for over 26 years with 4 different cancers that navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

I personally have not experienced lymphoedema, but have talked with many who have….. I must say I am very pleased to not have experienced this……  if you are being told there is a ‘risk factor’ connected to having tattoo's….. Russian Roulette comes to mind.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated…….

      Breast cancer

    …….. support group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

So why not join the group and put up the same post in there as you will get first hand experiences.
