Wanting to pamper myself

Not sure if this is the right forum. I've tried to book in for a facial, waxing, massage just to treat myself before my treatment start next week. I had my hip replaced in December and started Letrozole then. Next week it will be radiotherapy and taking Denosumab and Palbociclib.  The beautician has contacted me concerned because she has spoken to her insurers and there is concern incase any beauty treatment/massage affects the cancer, like bruising from the waxing that type of thing. It seems strange because it feels that the cancer is already stopping me from doing things that I want to do. Any advice please about beauty treatments that I could have, not nail varnish because it has never stayed on me.

  • Hi , don't take this personal. The beautician has don't the correct thing not only to protect herself but more importantly not to put a spanner into your treatment plans.

Lets see if anyone can help you out but you could call the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 or put a post up to our Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section to see if they can give you any suggestions..... but do allow a few working days for a reply.

  • I'm sure I've seen training for masseurs to be able to confidently treat people with cancer hon so it is possible.  Maybe there's a list of masseurs who are registered with a regulatory body that you could ask?

As for waxing maybe a quick check with your GP and/or a letter " to whom this may concern" that you can take with you to reassure them.  I would have thought facials are the same, ie; a letter of reassurance would be enough.

It's worth know which perfumed oils shouldn't be used as some will definitely be contraindicated so a plain oil like grapeseed (which they use for reflexology at my chemo unit) should be fine. Good luck hon xx

  • I asked on the Expert like Mike the highlander said. Macmillan gave me some pointers. Not been able to get in anywhere, being on crutches I can't do stairs and alot around here are over other shops. I've managed to get an appointment to have my hair cut, didn't bother when they said there was a chance of chemotherapy, But the tablet might thin my hair but not make it fall out. So at least I won't look like a Old English Sheepdog for much longer.

  • Ok what about a friend to give you a facial?  My daughter and I do one for each other.  I've never heard of facials or massages being banned but it is probably worth checking in with your consultant first if all these things are ok.  If you can get the go ahead then a friend or family member could perhaps help out.  I used to de-fuzz my mum's legs when she was undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer!  Keep hunting as we all need treats to keep us going xx
