Hi,
Today was my weekly chemo assessment and my bloods show my platelets are too low for my chemo to go ahead tomorrow. They have not suggested giving me a platelet transfusion. I only got the news on my way home from the hospital as the blood results weren’t back before I went home.
Should I be worried about this and is it an indication of a worse prognosis or is it a normal occurrence?
Thanks,
Pamela
Hi Pamela EP17 I have had over 800 hrs of chemo over my main 2 years treatment (for two types of Lymphoma) and having low platelets was a normal hold up for treatment going ahead….. sometimes I got transfusions other times not….. and this made no difference to my outcomes.
Low platelets is indeed an unfortunate side-effect of having chemo
If you are in any way concerned just call your CNS or your chemo support line ((hugs))
Hi Mike
Do you have any tips on what I should do to get them back up again or should I just let my body do its own repairing?
Pam
Hi Pam EP17 your platelets tend to recover by themselves and transfusions tend to be used if there is a need….
My Consultant always said that he prefers the bone marrow to do all the work….. although I have a blood cancer so there may be differences.
But a good healthy balanced diet may help so foods rich in vitamins B-12, C, D, and K, such as beef, liver, chicken, fish, seafood, citrus, tomatoes, potatoes, egg yolks, and cereals. Iron-rich foods such as red meat, pork, and poultry…… may help.
