Chemo mouth painful

Hi all, new to this group!

my dad has small cell lung cancer and has had 2 lots of chemo so far. The frost was 31st dec and was only carboplatin, the second was 3 weeks later on the 22nd of Jan this time carbo and etoposide (around 2.5hrs) next day he was ok other than feeling somewhat achy and restless!

he also had filgrastim injection for 5 days, so not sure if this has made it worse?

but he seems to have what’s called chemo mouth? His mouth is so sore he’s finding it hard to eat as it hurts, he describes it as fire and gravel! He’s tried salt water but was too painful and the dr prescribed a steroid to use as a mountwash, again too painful. He does have an appointment tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone else had such an experience with this? And any other remedies he could try! He is eating only soft foods at the moment. And nothing acidic or anything too irritating!
TIA

  • Hi  …. sorry to hear about your dad.

Chemo mouth is very uncomfortable, I found that we had to try different mouth washes as time went on so he does need to talk this through with his team.

The one thing that helped me a lot was chain sucking blitzed fresh pineapple that is put into ice cube trays and frozen…… at times I was given ice poles to suck as I was having my chemo as the mouth is the area of the body that reacts the most.
