I hope this is the right thread my nan has had cancer for a few years she is on the tablets for chemo so she hasn't lost her hair but she's now finding it hard to manage as it's gone very frizzy and curly.

I just want to make her feel better about something so has anyone got any tips of what we can do with her hair ie if there's any products that have seemed really good to use?

I know its the least of our worries but even if I can get her hair feeling nice again I think that will help her mood a little.

  • Hello PaigeW

Welcome to the Community. You are very welcome to post on here to have support for your Nan and yourself.

I am sorry to hear that your Nan has been treated for cancer. I can understand what a worry it must be and it is good that she has you thinking about her and how you can help her feel better.

I had chemotherapy myself and although I did not lose my hair due to the cooling cap, my hair thinned all over and lost condition. My chemo finished last year but for some time after it became frizzy, dry and although not curly, it had waves and bits that just popped up where they shouldn't do.

I totally get how hair can have a big impact on how we feel about ourselves when going through cancer treatment. If Nan is anything like me when my hair looked better, I felt a bit better.

I found conditioner was all of a sudden my best friend. I used a deep conditioning treatment each week- no particular brand - just one of those deeply moisturising ones- mine smelt of bananas but it did the job. I used to gently wash my hair and then leave it on for a good half hour before rinsing. I tried to leave my hair to dry naturally as much as possible. I used a wide toothed comb rather than a brush. When I washed my hair I bought one for curly hair as they tend to be more moisturising. I conditioned every time I washed my hair. Next I would use one of the wonder water conditioners- the ones you leave for 8 seconds and then rinse out, they leave a fine coating on your hair. I have tried different brands and they have all been good.

Between hair washes I used some spray in children's hair conditioner/detangling spray that helped.

Something else to maybe consider is to get a silky pillow case for Nan. This stopped the tangles for me when my hair was shedding but I would think it would be worth a try for the frizz.

I hope this may help a bit

  • This is a massive help thankyou so much Jane. It's exactly the same what's happening with her hair, it's a massive help just having something I can help her with when you can't do as much as you want to.

  • I do understand- mine got really dry and frizzy at one stage and by doing all the conditioning it is getting back to normal. I also avoid hair spray etc as that can be drying. I did think about some of the serums but the wonder water is far better as its lighter and doesn't make your hair go stiff. I also found letting my hair get a little bit longer meant it became a bit heavier and sort of pulled the hair down straighter. Gradually as Nan's hair grows she will be able to get the drier damaged bits trimmed off. I also found having a few layer put in helped a bit.

If there is anything else you or Nan need please do ask
