Fatigue and body aches AFTER chemo is finished

Hi.  My last chemo was at the beginning of September.  I’m waiting on radiotherapy to start in the next couple of weeks (delayed due to having portacath removal).  I’ve been feeling very tired, drained and aching joints.  Is this normal to be feeling like this several weeks after chemo has finished?  I know that fatigue is due to get worse after radiotherapy has finished so I’m hearing up for that but it seems that I will already be starting off on the downside.  Any comments / support welcome.  Thank you. • I felt just like that. My oncologist said that my body was "generally inflamed" after chemo and it was normal to be so tired and achy. I was absolutely shattered after my 4EC and 4 Paclitaxel - in bed and barely functioning for at least a week afterwards. I remember wondering how on earth I was going to manage 15 rounds of radiotherapy at that time. With lifts from friends and family I managed and given I was tired anyway, a bit more tired didn't seem to matter so much in the end. At least it was another step towards the end of treatment and that kept me going. I am still a bit tired now 6 months or so later, but it gets better week by week. I just try to look for the small improvements and notice when I am doing something more than in the previous week or two. Even if its just that I wasn't tired until 4 pm instead of 3pm, or I managed to cook a meal, or clean the kitchen floor in one go etc. I am much better now, but still have to pace myself. Its a learning curve. Exercise helps and pacing myself.  I am still improving, but I've just had to accept that it all takes time. You will get through your radiotherapy. I feel for you as I remember being there. tiredness and aches definitely do get better with time and a lot of patience! Good luck for your radiotherapy and I hope your fatigue begins to lift a bit xx

  • The accumulation of the chemo effects on your body will last a long time so being fatigued and have aches/pains less than a month out from the end of treatment is not surprising, yes normal.

My Consultant told me that going through treatments like these was like doing a boxing match and a marathon every day over the months of treatments and this was done without any training. Think doing the London Marathon without any training and you had to finish it as your life depended on it……. this is the journey you have been on so it most likely will take much longer than you would think to get back to some normality

  • It is a bit like a marathon! It took a few months or more for my various aches in muscles and bones to settle down after treatment. Normal Energy levels is taking a bit longer!

  • I actually had 16 years of treatment with the final 2years being full on so my recovery was a good two years…… but the up side is I am now over 6 years in remission.
