Very worried about Mum's upcoming chemo

Hi everyone,

Well to cut a long story short my mum is starting chemo in early Jan. The doctor seemed quite hopeful and explained the possible side effects, and it seemed potentially quite bad but doable. Unfortunately since then I've been reading about the particular drugs (gemcitabine and cisplatin) and have worked myself up into a right mess. I'm just worrying about how she will cope if she has the worst of it, and also whether there will be permananent damage. On top of all that there is the possibility it won't work.

All the best,
James

  • Hi and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear your mum needs chemo. The doctors always tell you  the worst scenario of chemo. Difficult to predict how people react as everyone is different. I had 6 weeks of Gem/Cis and didn't really have any problems except some tiredness. Just some tips for mum going for treatment. It can be a long day in the chair, so loose comfortable clothes. Plenty of drinks and snacks and something to keep her occupied. Chemo lounges are usually friendly and upbeat, and not all doom and gloom as you may expect. This chemo can cause mouth sores, so I was advised to use a good quality mouthwash regularly to help prevent this. If you let us know what cancer mum is being treated for, we can point you to a group where others may have more specific experience. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

  • Thank you so much for your reply rily. Mum's cancer is bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma). It's one with a generally crap prognosis, but mum's was caught when still localised (though inoperable).
