Kidney Function Test Pre Chemo (GFR) - Has anyone or anyone you know commenced carboplatin or any chemo without it and if so what has your experience been?

My mum had a single cycle of carboplatin monotherapy without a kidney function test being done early August. It was scheduled in for a week after. Sadly mum has become very unwell and is now in palliative care and we're trying to understand root cause. From research, online and including speaking to her oncologist, we are getting different and contradicting advice regarding kidney (GFR) tests and requirement for them pre versus during chemo treatment. We have understood subsequently the GFR test is crucial to establishing how much drug is given during the chemo cycles. Whilst we are exploring to understand any national policy / guidance positions, we'd really welcome any feedback from the Macmillan community.

So, huge thanks in advance - we are thinking of everyone affected by cancer.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm really sorry to hear that after having treatment your mum has become very unwell.

I can't answer your questions but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. As this is a fairly quiet group it might be an idea to also post this in the group for your mum's type of cancer.

If you'd like to tell me what type of cancer your mum was diagnosed with I could provide a direct link to that group. Alternatively you could look through this list and join the appropriate group and then copy and paste your post from here.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear your Mum so unwell.

I had 2 doses of Carboplatin over 6 weeks of Radiotherapyon my throat, I did have all relevant tests and was cleared for Carboplatin which to my knowledge is normally given to treat ovarian cancer. I'm 52 & have a heart condition which ruled out the usual chemo choices as they can cause vascular damage.

I was very poorly mid treatment right through to 6 weeks post treatment, I lost 3 stone! I could barely eat or drink anything and an NG feeding tube made me vomit even more so I took it out. At worst I couldn't take food or fluids at all for 3 days so had to Red Card myself and have 3 days in hospital.

I am 13 weeks post treatment now and still have severe fatique and weakness from al the muscle I lost.

My best wishes to you and family and Mum, I do hope she will pick up soon, I am not sure my post offers any answers or helps but I hope it will.
