Hello,

I am new to this and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice please. My mum has recently been diagnosed with abdominal stage 4 cancer along with other cancers which are stage 3C. She will be receiving chemotherapy in the next 2-3 weeks and I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can advise on the likely side affects that she is likely to experience. I just want to be prepared as much as possible so I can support her the best I can

I hope someone can offer some advice as with COVID and keeping my distance I am struggling with how best to support her

Thank you

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with abdominal cancer and I understand what a worrying time this must be for you both.

I had a peek at your profile to see where in the abdomen your mum's cancer is as I was going to provide a link to the appropriate cancer specific group so that the members of the group could help with your questions. Unfortunately, you haven't completed it yet so instead this link will take you to the list of groups. You can have a look through them and choose the appropriate group which you can join and post in the same way as you did here.

The advantage of joining the group is that you will connect with others who have that specific cancer and can tell you about their experiences with chemotherapy and any side effects.

Thank you, we don’t know the exact type yet as this was unexpected as she was due to be starting treatment for lung cancer

Are there different types of abdominal cancer then?

  • Hi

There are several types of abdominal cancer including cancer of the stomach, bowels, liver, pancreas, kidneys and bladder.

Your mum should have been assigned a CNS (cancer nurse specialist) who is her point of contact with her hospital team. She could ask her where in the abdomen the cancer has been found and you could then join the group here for that type of cancer.

In the meantime, if your mum's lung cancer is a primary cancer then you could join the lung cancer group but if it's spread from the cancer in her abdomen then there is a secondary lung cancer group you could join. Whichever of these groups is the appropriate one you'll be able to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others.
