Walking coordination issues due to side effects

Hi there,

I'm currently taking oral temozolomide on a 5 day/4 weekly cycle for a tumour in my brain stem/spinal cord. Obviously there are some side effects that go along with that including fatigue etc but my biggest issue at the moment appears to be confidence or coordination in my walking while I'm on the chemo and after it. It appears to be unrelated to my tumour and more a side effect of the treatment. I shuffle significantly, worrying that I'm going to fall with every step I make even though my balance when stood and the strength in my legs are both seemingly fine.

I wondered if anyone had similar experiences and suggestions on how to improve my walking, be that exercise or equipment?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear about the side effects that the chemo is causing you and noticed that your post hadn't had any responses yet.

I know that you don't think it's related to your brain tumour but it might be an idea to join and post this message in the brain tumours group as there may be people in the group who've had the same experience.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then post your question after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

You could post your question about how to improve your walking in ask a physio and Catherine, Macmillan's volunteer physiotherapist, will aim to reply within 2 working days.
