Hi at my chemo 3 weeks ago i suffered extravasation in my hand. it was dealt with very quickly by the nurses and doctor then a plastic surgeon came and kept my in hospital over night discharging me the following day. my oncologist saw it last week adn said no more chemo in that hand. It is not feeling any better - if anything its getting worse, it is sore, numb in places and feels cold. my question is will this get better over time and do i need to do anything about it? thank you stef

    Hi Steph  /

OUCH!  Thankfully this is very uncommon but that doesn't help you much :-/

Depending on the severity and how quickly the extravasation was noticed can give you some pointers as to how much damage has been done.  Have you any ulceration or is this confined to tissue damage ?

In severe cases you may need surgery to remove damaged tissue, probably why a plastic surgeon was wheeled in.

This is why ALL patients should be given a PICC iv line or similar, to minimise the risk of even minor vein damage.

How are you feeling this morning ? This can take ages to recover from so we hope you have a quicker recovery.

I did a community search as you have had no replies as yet, and you can find all other discussions about Extravasation clicking this link.

Hope this is of some little help, take care, G n' J

Thank you so much very useful information. It is 3 weeks since it happened - hand still a little tender and numb but i feel it is improving. The lump was very big when it happend probaby the size of a small satsuma, i saw it straight away and nurses dealt with it super fast.  nothing visable on outside of hand now. Had chemo 5 yestrday and they found a vein in my other hand ( oncologist has said no way has any chemo to go in damaged hand) I sat there for 7 hours terrified to move ( my choice as they said it wasnt a problem - no loo for all that time :) )  Doesnt seem to want to do a PICC though i did mention it to him. thank you again   stef x
