Hiya
My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic, liver and lung cancer in March this year, I have recently read on my husbands notes on his GP records that he is in his final weeks. This was so hard seeing it in black and white, even though we can see him deteriorating. He is still at home. He hasn’t been able to have his chemo for 8 weeks now as he keeps getting infections. He is due for chemo this Thursday, but I’m wondering why they book him in for chemo when they have it written down that he only has weeks left. He isn’t eating as much now but tries to keep a positive attitude. I didn’t tell mys husband I read this about his prognosis as I want him to remain positive, am I doing the right thing? I know no one can tell me if it’s right or wrong, but I am really struggling with his.
Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your husband, I had a similar thing happen when I read my husbands records it said life expectancy 12 months was like a kick in the stomach so much so I read it at work and broke down in front of my friend, the first time I had actually cried, it's very hard hearing that but like you say seeing it in black and white is tough.
It's probably best to ask his oncologist why he has him down for treatment but they probably want to continue maybe to help his symptoms,
How are you doing is something a lot of people ask and they mean well but it's very hard to explain how you are feeling when you just feel sad for what's to come
Hugs xxx
Hi there,
it’s very hard trying to stay strong for everyone, visitors come and go and always ask how I am too, but like you say it’s hard to explain when you are feeling so sad and broken, I try to keep up the small chat and hold in the tears. I really don’t like to cry in front of my husband because he would feel guilty at he has made me sad. He is so strong and doesn’t think about himself, he said he is not frightened of dying but worries about me being left behind. We have two sons and he has two daughters, they are all supportive but this might sound selfish but I really feel sad when they are going home to their own families. My husband sleeps a lot during the day and doesn’t really want the TV on or radio. It’s such a shame because he was really looking forward to retiring in February as he was 66, but then this heartbreaking news came on our anniversary in March. It feels like my husband has been going through this for years but it’s only been 7 months. He has lost 7 stone so far and all the strength in his legs have gone. It feels so good being able to write all of this down. Thank you so much for replying to me, means a lot.
Hi , I'm glad you feel you can off load sometimes it's good to talk to complete strangers as I think you can be more open then with family, it's such a shame our husbands are having to go through this and some of what you have said does sound so familiar, this is our second time with cancer the first time was 8 years ago when he had throat cancer where he had a full laryngectomy where they took his voice box out and 30 rounds of radiotherapy, exactly 8 years to the date this year he was diagnosed again with the same thing this time not curable and is on palliative care, he is having immunotherapy treatment and an appointment next week to see if treatment is working if not then they will stop it and he'll have maybe 12 months which I can't bear to think about and he's only 65 and he's not the same man he was 12 months ago it's such a horrible disease
It's good that you have visitors but sometimes you just want to be left alone with your own thoughts and I find putting on a brave face every day is a drain, I ho to work every day which helps sometimes keep my mind off it but I'd rather be home with my husband but at the moment he just wants things to be as normal as possible and he's quite good at self caring , we've been married 38 years and been together 44 with no children
Sorry about the long post just thought I'd have a chat
