New to this and just reaching out for any support, advice or help from anyone who might understand. My partner had breast cancer in 2022, mastectomy, 14 lymph nodes removed. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy and ongoing drug treatment. Her reconstruction finally happened in September 2025, which was a successful operation but almost immediately afterwards she struggled with chronic back pain. After months of being passed around the system her oncologist finally requested MRI spine at end of January 2026. Found metastasis in her spine in two places including high up in the neck, also pelvis and femurs. Radiotherapy was done followed by chemo on a weekly basis. Shes had numerous hospital stays for infection and sepsis once since. Started with sickness and headaches about 6 weeks ago, culminating in another hospital stay this week. Yesterday they did an MRI on her head and found cancer in her brain, listed as extensive leptomeningeal disease.
We have been fighting this for what seems like a long time and to get this news now is utterly devastating. I dont know what to expect now, or how to cope with caring for someone going through this. She is being so brave but the fatigue is already massive for her, at least the nausea and vomiting is under control now. Her team are meeting next Tuesday to determine a plan, but I am on pins all the time, terrified of what might happen any minute and feeling completely unequipped to deal with it.
Hi Jamee, I’m so sorry to read this. Caring for someone you love with cancer is horrendous. You’re constantly watching and worrying. You’ve come to the right place to talk about your feelings. I’ve found this online community to be a lifeline. We all know we can say whatever we like, there’s no criticism, just support.
Thank you for the response Maureen, I do appreciate it.
It's a very difficult place to be at the moment, sitting with this. I'm trying not to be hyper vigilant, hovering around all the time being super annoying. But I am terrified every time she goes to sleep what is going to happen next. We don't have any plans or contact from the hospital as yet so we are just a bit in limbo waiting for that and each day my partner seems to feel more poorly and have increased problems with her stomach making eating anything less and less appealing.
We knew this particular war wasn't one we were going to win in the end , but this just feels like suddenly we in a race to the end and the universe has dealt the cruelest card it could. I'm permanently frightened and doubting my own ability to cope with much more and somehow continue to hold down a job and be a parent.
Hi James, it’s so awful when you’re constantly on red alert. I know I get on my partner’s nerves when I’m constantly asking him how he is. You must feel so alone if you’re coping with all this without any support. Does the team meet tomorrow or next Tuesday? Being in limbo is awful. I seemed to be able to cope when I was taking my partner to Hospital every day for his radiotherapy but now that’s stopped it’s floored me again. How many children do you have? How are you managing with everything? Do you have any family members who will help you?
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
