New and isolated caring for my partner

Took my partner to A+E just over two weeks ago for extreme breathlessness and weakness. His face was also mottled grey and yellow. Long story short they kept him in, did an endoscopy, took a biopsy, then CT scan. Turns out he has a massive tumour in his stomach that has enveloped his pancreas, one kidney, and has metastasised in his liver. There is also a necrotic mass in one part of his liver.

We are home now but waiting impatiently for histology results to go to the surgery and oncology team meeting so they can suggest a plan. I can’t sleep, neither of us can eat (though I make sure I cook every day), and although friends and family know it is cancer he doesn’t want to really talk to them until it has officially been staged and treatment suggested. It’s so hard to hear it all being downplayed, which is absolutely his perogative, but it leaves me feeling alone. I’m the only one who knows he needs 24 hour care. And I’m the only one who provides it. And we have never lived together though I’ve moved in now. I feel out of my depth. It’s a lot for a fortnight! I have chronic illnesses and am grieving the loss of my son last year. I expect this is TMI but this is my first post and I needed to get that out, sorry.

  • Oh Bjorkish- that is a lot! I think this is what the carers only forum is for. You are not alone.

im not sure I can help much but I’ve just been directed to Carers Together- a charity that can offer support. Now I’m looking at it I wish I had reached out sooner. My partner has reached the end of his treatment until he gets re tested and I’m feeling it more now he is getting better and I’m starting to be allowed a life back- but probably because I didn’t seek help sooner. Get as much support as possible. You’re going to need it and there’s no shame in that.

Maybe focus now on getting your support system in place and ensuring you have time for this whilst caring.

Sending love, strength and space x

  • Hi Bjorkish

Really sorry to read all that you are dealing with, don't have any advice as just at the start of this journey with cancer and my partner, but I am also a chronic illness sufferer (fibromyalgia) so I understand how hard that side of it can be.  You are definitely not alone!

Make sure you take some small moments for yourself and allow yourself to rest, so that you don't flare up your chronic illness.

    Sending gentle hugs

    Take care

    MJ

  • Thank you for your reply, I needed telling I am allowed to get support. You can’t pour from an empty jug right? I have definitely neglected my friendships and need to get back on track with that to break the isolation.
I hope you are able to look after yourself more now the immediate pressure is off x

  • Thank you for the reminder that I need to and am allowed to look after myself. I also have Fibro and M.E and I’m no use to anyone if I crash. You think I’d have learned by age 57, yet here we are! Smile

I hope you can also find space and time to practice self-care Two hearts

  • I wonder if you have a hospice near by that you can both referred in to. Ours was very good, supporting my husband until he died, and me as a carer and since he died s well. .

There is also carers assessment you can request, sadly mine wasnt quick enough for me, but its worth looking into.

I also have ME so caring was exhausting, I temporarily gave up work to look after him as he deteriorated. Big hugs for you both.
