Face mask for radiotherapy causing husband extreme anxiety - how can I help him?

My husband has just started radiotherapy for throat cancer. The mask he has to wear is really causing him serious anxiety . He is taking 2mg of lorazepam before hand to get him through the session. Yesterday he took the tablets too close to the treatment and had to stop. After a 40 minute walk he was ok. The anxiety today is overwhelming him. He just can’t believe he’ll get through today, but I know he will as we are talking the tablets 90 minutes before hand. I have never seen him so scared, he has no faith in it ever working again. Any comments would help me to help him.

  • Hi Saste, I'm Tony one of the Community Champions, I've been through the treatment for Voicebox/Throat Cancer however I only had a Laryngectomy and no follow on Radiotherapy, I was messured and had a mask fitted but I had tou admit I can understand your Hubby's fears as I was so relieved was able to refuse the RT

I suggest that you put this request onto the Head and Neck Forum as others will most definitely have gone through the treatment

I wish you both all the best and please tell him it's going to be okay and hopefully successful,He should also keep reminding the Radiologists of his fears as he could have music playing in headsets or even a play

    Take care, Tony

  • Hi Saste, sorry to hear that your husband is feeling that way.

It might be worthwhile practising at home, focusing on an object and then listing 'Ten of your favourite XXX'. Then you have to think about putting them in alphabetical order.

You can try that, or create a list together, so that 'you're both there'.

Another thing is 'the finger dance'. Touching your thumb to each of your fingers on one hand, then the other, then doing that backwards. During the scan, you need to stay very still, but if you get your arms and hands into a good position, you can do it without moving.

They can be done together for extra distraction.

I hope you find something. Keep looking after each other x
