This year has been horrendous. My husband was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in April and is currently working through chemo before surgery in November. One tumour is operable but the second isn't, hence the chemo. We have been together over 30 years and I thought I was strong enough to deal with this having lost a number of family and friends to cancer but watching someone who has been my world for most of my adult life battle this insidious disease and seeing the changes and side effects is worse than anything else. On the outside I am calm, taking everything in my stride, on the inside I feel in knots, anxious for the future and crying most nights when alone. I am determined to be there for him but don't want him to see me like this. As a family we have a lot going on with illness and elderly parents plus we both work full time. I wanted to post this as it's the only way I can let my feelings out in public. I want to stay positive but it's difficult. I'm reaching out so I don't feel so alone with this. I don't want to burden my husband whilst he's fighting for his life.
Really sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. I think as carers we all try and battle on by ourselves and it’s really hard especially when the person you would usually share all your worries with is the one person you feel you don’t want to burden. I have found it helpful to finally attend a macmillan support group. Everyone was so kind and supportive. I literally sat and cried my way through the first meeting! My GP also referred me for therapy for my anxiety. Again, I’d steered clear for a long time thinking it’s not for me but it’s actually helpful to hear from others and to learn different ways to cope. Mine is an online weekly session with no camera or mics on so totally anonymous which might help you to feel more comfortable. This week we talked about different types of worry and I realised a lot of my worries are actually hypothetical so I’m basically worrying about situations that may never arise! Maybe these might be something you could consider??
Glad you’ve reached out to us. It is a hard task caring for a loved one. I’m sure you’re going a great job xx
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
