Should I leave my job to care for my mother?

Hello everyone.

So last year my mother found out she had bladder cancer, unfortunately the hospital knew for 9 months before informing us. Anyway fast forward to now. They managed to complely remove it with radio therapy, so for the last month we've been living on that massive win... Unfortunately last week we found out she now has lung cancer, and due to her age and chronic health conditions they've told her there is nothing they can do. It's not affecting her at the moment but it's likely to do so soon in the future. My dad isnt very mobile and they both rely on me for shopping / appointments etc. I love both my parents very much so I don't find it a burden at all. I have a wife and 2 young children to support and work full time as a lighting technician in live events. I work some stupid hours some weeks and know when the time comes it's going to be impossible to juggle everything, I'm also thinking of my mental health with everything going on. Should I look at leaving my job at some point in the future? To full time care? Anyone else been in this situation?

Xoxo

  • Hi

My name is Steph and I’m part of the team who look after the Online Community here at Macmillan.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's cancer diagnoses and I hope that the Community can help support you. To help you find the right support, I have joined you to this Carers Only forum and moved your post here from New to the Community.

Whilst you're waiting for members to reply, I thought I would offer you some information and support from Macmillan.

It's understandable that you're considering leaving your job, when you are concerned about having the time to care for your parents. It's important to look after yourself, especially when there are other people depending on you. There may be other options available to you than leaving your job. Macmillan has information about your rights at work whilst caring for someone with cancer.

If you’d like to talk anything through with someone at Macmillan, I’d encourage you to contact the Support Line for ongoing support. Even if you just want to chat with someone who is there to listen, do give us a call.  Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00email or live webchat.

We have some information here to help support you when your loved one has cancer.

In addition to this carers forum, you would be very welcome to join the lung cancer forum for any questions you have around diagnosis and healthcare.

I hope you find the support you’re looking for. Please do let us know if you have any questions or need further support with anything at all. I hope the Community helps to show you that you don’t have to go through this alone.
