What can I read?

Can anyone suggest any books designed to help those of us caring for someone with incurable cancer? I know this sounds a bit 'old hat' but I'd just like something to read that might give me some guidance or something, I feel so isolated in this and nobody I know has been through it. Any ideas please?

  • Hi Spiritinthesky

Good question! I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but Kathryn Mannix’s ‘With the end in mind’ is very good. I will be interested to see what other suggestions you receive.

    • Thankyou for that suggestion, I've ordered a copy. As you might have seen, no other suggestions; I guess people prefer podcasts to books nowadays. Thanks again.
  • Hi Spiritinthesky.

I care for my fella and recently we've had a setback in his recovery.  I told him exactly what you said, that I feel isolated in all this.  He can't speak anymore but cuddled me and mimed I've got him.  He does understand what I meant, though, and we both had a good cry.

I read extensively all I can regarding his condition, via the internet, and only sites I trust.

I would, however, prefer an actual book to read about the experience someone's been through as a carer as I feel we do get neglected by some in the medical profession.  Sometimes I feel like a trainee nurse who isn't doing her duty in the correct manner!  It's a tough call and a lot of us are retirees, easily knackered and washed out with a new unpaid job without pay or holidays.

Enough of my whining and I'll try to get hold of that recommend book.

    Take care all,

    Gill xx

  • I meant respite, not pay.  Maybe I should try and get some sleep.
