Hi. My sister has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

She will be havingba stoma fitted and 4 weeks of daily radiotherapy.

I live with her in a 1 bed bungslow and share the bedroom.

I'm exhausted because shes invontinrnt and waking me up 2 or 3 times in.the night, to take her to the yoilet.

She wears adult nappies but they leak (we have bed pads but its not nice to be wet in bed)

Shes disabled and needs help to get in and out of bed. I'm struggling and need help.

Before i get social services involved, how would a nightime carer work as she goes at different times.

I just feel no ine can.help. there are no other female family members who can help.

My sister won't go in.care and i dont want her to, unless for respite.

She doesnt have much money in savings as never worked

Thank you for any advice

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your sister, that does sound like a really difficult situation that would cause anyone to be exhausted.

Your sister is entitled to a needs assessment and you a carers assessment to she how you can be helped, that is of course normally done by social services see here.

Sorry I have no idea how a nighttime care might work, perhaps the closest I know of was when my parents were in a sheltered housing project with emergency call cords in every room with a attendant on call 24/7.

    <<hugs>>

  • Thank you. I'll speak to social services on Monday.

She's having a vidit from the incontinrnce team in two weeks. Hopefully, if they can sort out good pads, she will be anle to sleep through the night as we are both tired from not getting a full nights sleep
