Drug Trials

We have a dilemma - my husband has stage 4 liposarcoma and they gave him a very harsh chemo routine which we agreed to - without realising how harsh it would be. To cut a long story short they wont do any more of the 2 drug chemo which was his first round, but we now have the option of reverting to just one of the two, or signing up to a trial where there is a 50% chance he will get the original one dose, and a 50% chance of a trial drug - we will know which but not until we've signed up and the random choice is made in USA.

Has anyone else been offered an option like this? My husband hasnt read all the details yet but i have and whichever drug he ends up on it will be an awful lot more tests for the trial purposes ... i just dont know whether i want him spending more time being tested rather than trying to get on with whatever time we have ....

Ultimately its my husband's choice and i will support him either way but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or advice.

thanks

  • Hi

That would seem to be a standard double blind trial. I know of a few people who joined and felt that while it might not make a difference to them perhaps it gave some meaning to the treatment of people in the future.

Of course any decision around treatment has the link to a cost/benefit analysis. I know of people who have asked the oncologist "what would you recommend if this was your dad?". The whole process of informed consent is often quite challenging.

Glad to see you say your support him whatever, all we can do really and never regret a decision we made.

    <<hugs>>
