Anyone else find this happens?

I am in frustrated mode right now. I wont say today because my emotions change from hour to hour.  Am pleased that finally after 2 weeks in hospital my husband might be able to come home on Wednesday - that was due to his inability to keep anything down after his first round of chemo that kept him in hospital for 8 days (rather than the 3 we had expected)

I'm desperate to have him home but am so frustrated by the lack of communication between different depts in the hospital - oncology, pain, nutrition etc and also the lack of communication with our GP and other people who could help in our community eg district nurses and hospice outreach help.

My life is already falling apart with the thought of losing my husband of 20 years and this additional stress is really not helping. Why can't they just talk to each other to make it easier for both me as a carer, and the love of my life who has stage for cancer?

Am i just unlucky or is this normal ?

  • Hi Hermes,

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and that he has had a long stay in hospital.

To be honest, I think the lack of communication it is quite normal unfortunately. When my dad was in hospital for a few days recently, his oncologist said he would have to postpone his chemo, but we had a call from the chemo department the next day saying my dad hadnt turned up for chemo. I told them he was currently in hospital.

I've found the best way to get information is through my dad's macmillan nurse team. They seem to have all the information to hand and are always on the ball. Migjt be worth giving them a call to get the answers you want.

    Good luck with everything! x

  • Hi Hermes, we once waited for over 2 hours to see a gynae because they could not find my wife's notes - if they had only asked us we might have suggested ask the heart unit she was there 2 days ago. Hospitals are often stretched welll beyond breaking point and comms often comes bottom of the pile.

Have to concur with link103 though - the Macmillan nurse on our oncology team is fantastic, they know all the right buttons to push and will often make things happen almost like magic.

    <<hugs>>
