In the last few weeks my wife was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer that has spread widely throughout the body including brain, liver, lymph nodes, eye etc.

Everything is happening so fast and I can’t quite get my head around things, she started treatments last week chemo and radio at this stage and she is so different and so tired and so not like her. I feel really sorry for her and totally useless in terms of being able to help.

Our world has turned upside down, our life our plans and our dreams seem like an unattainable fantasy right now. I can’t seem to think of anything else anymore yet don’t seem able to resolve anything.

how do you find a way of coping, getting through this and accept long the new reality?

  • Dear Yorkie65,

I fully understand where you are at, my wife developed lung cancer from gall bladder cancer. There is no sugar coating the situation and to be honest there are very tough times ahead. However you just have to take each day as it comes and try to be positive, your wife won’t want to see you miserable despite it’s how you feel. My advice would be to see your GP, if you haven’t done so, and get anti depressants and some sleeping tablets if possible. You will find the whole scenario exhausting and you will have to be strong for both of you so sleep is critical. Next I recommend counselling which you should be able to get via the cancer team or your local hospice, if you try the NHS you will likely have to wait for weeks and you really do need it asap. Finally if you have close family or friend to confide in I found it helpful also.

Be strong my friend, I’m sure everyone will wish you both very best wishes and hope for the future.

    Best Wishes

    Paul
