Anyone here treated at Royal Marsden Private? (Confusion over charges)

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with billing.

We’ve found the charges quite confusing and not very transparent. There have been several occasions where we weren’t told in advance whether something would be chargeable, or how much it would cost.

For example:

  • Very short phone calls with the consultant (just a few minutes) were billed, even when we hadn’t specifically requested a phone consultation.
  • We also noticed charges for services that, as far as we were aware, we hadn’t actually used. We only discovered this after the insurance company received the invoice, and then had to ask them to help reverse the charge.

I’m not trying to criticise the clinical care itself – I’m just wondering whether anyone else has found the billing process confusing, or has had to query unexpected charges.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • Hi

I haven’t had private cancer treatment but noticed you hadn’t had a response. My only experience of private care has been having orthopaedic surgery done privately, where they tend to offer a fixed price package up front, as things are more predictable. I have worked in a role in the private sector where every minute had to be accounted for and preferably billed to someone, so I guess I am not surprised to hear you were billed for phone calls. Sadly I think it’s normal to have to review invoices in detail.
