Hi everyone,

You may have seen the Community team have started a ‘What do you wish you had known’ blog series where we ask Community members with different lived experiences what they wish they had known, in the hope this may be helpful to others on a similar journey.

In the latest of our new series of blogs sharing hints and tips from members, we are asking:

"What do you wish you had known before you had surgery?"

This could include questions you might want to ask, practical tips or help with anxiety when approaching appointments and some reassuring messages for someone who may be about to have the same surgery as you.

We will be featuring some of your suggestions in an upcoming Community News Blog, but this thread will remain as a resource for anyone who needs it.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and support. If you have any questions, would like to be a guest blogger to share your individual story, or need additional support, please email community@macmillan.org.uk and we will be happy to help.

  • I had a staging laparoscopy on 16th january i was terrified but the staff were amazing. Was home same day. Bit painful for about 3 days but ok then. I think its the thought of these things sometime

  • It’s a great idea - I did a little chart with days/times for each med and ticked it off every time so I knew exactly what I’d taken. Thumbsup tone1

  • I had a trial dissection for gallbladder cancer on 12th february 2026. Im very pleased to sat it all went well. I wish someone would have told me about the overwhelming fear of the unknown. The people i met in hospital helped me no end as they had all been in my situation as they all had some type of cancer. The surgeons were exceptional and informative and all other staff dealing with me during my operation were very kind and reassuring. You have to trust your team and know their trying to help you not harm you. I was only in intensive care for 1 day then back on the main ward. Staff all fantastic. I came home within 6 days and recovering well. Hope this helps someone waiting to go into have their operation.
